Lydney Rugby sign up Duncan Bell after brief spell at Clifton

FORMER England international Duncan Bell said the opportunity to become Lydney's new head coach was too good to turn down.

Bell, who spent nine years at Bath and won five caps for his country, was only appointed scrum coach at National Two South rivals Clifton two weeks ago.

But in a dramatic U-turn, the former tight-head prop, who only retired at the end of last season, has been snapped up by the Severnsiders to lead them forward.

"It all happened within 24 hours and it has been a bit of a whirlwind to be honest," said Bell, who played 168 times for Bath.

"It was only two weeks ago that I managed to get a coaching position at Clifton, and although it was a good opportunity, it was purely as scrum coach.

"I always wanted to be either a forwards coach or head coach and when Clifton came along it was on my doorstep so I jumped at the chance.

"I had already done two or three sessions at Clifton but the Lydney job was something I could not pass up.

"It fitted the bill perfectly and it was a bit embarrassing that I was at Clifton and had to tell them that I was moving on to Lydney.

"But there was no option really. The job was too good to turn down, it was a head coach role and that is exactly what I wanted."
