How can MP still back a badger cull?
I HAVE seen on Neil Carmichael's website that he continues to argue in favour of a badger cull.
I don't know why I am surprised he still persists in believing killing badgers is the only solution to bovine TB. How much evidence does he need to understand that culling won't work?

Badger in their sights.
Ten years and millions of pounds of scientific research has been spent demonstrating quite clearly that badger culling will not be effective in eradicating bovine TB. I wonder whether he has talked to the scientists (including local scientists who have worked in this field for years).
A vaccine is clearly the answer but when the Coalition Government came to power they cancelled five out of the six vaccine trials set up by the Labour Government. This was a political move as it then allowed the coalition to argue vaccination was only a remote possibility.

But work on producing a vaccine has had a recent scientific breakthrough – researchers at the Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency have developed a test to differentiate between infected and vaccinated cattle. This would overcome the problems with European bans on beef from vaccinated cattle.

“Sensible argument, well stated, and more people are realising this by the day. One could also add that the cattle testing regime is so inaccurate as to be worthless and those passing the test may well be spreading the disease to the rest of the herd. Thank God we now have another six months to develop vaccines, convince the EU to accept vaccinated animals, improve animal husbandry, improve biosecurity and see the results of those heroes who are already vaccinating badgers.”
