“all these crashes sound like the result of bad driving not accidents, i have said it before, the driving test is far to easy, it must be, judging by the fools i see on the road all the time.”

“Safest roads seem to be those where everyone travels about the same speed. There'll be other issues at dangerous junctions, misleading bends or dodgy road surfaces.
If someone is tail gating often the easiest thing to do is pull over and let them be on their way. If theyre going to have an accident let them do it on their own, not that they usually do.
Slowing down for tail gaters to make life difficult, does that make it more or less safe?”

“i drove this road yesterday and was following someone doing just 35mph and watched lots of ppl overtaking where they shouldnt have done. i will wait till proper places to overtake but i do think something should be done along this road. im no angel i have speeded on there trying to get the hospital.but some of these can drive to slow and cause others to get angry who then take it out on their driving......if im tailgated anywhere though im the one who will just drive slower. i have my child in my car who comes before someone wanting to drive faster so i will go slower sorry. hope these ppl recover well from their accident”

“Can we PLEASE have more police on the A48 PLEASE....
I drive the A48 at least twice a day, and some the driving seen, young and old drivers, new and old cars, the whole spectrum - there are some real plonkers on that road at times. It seems to attract the muppets.
A police exercise would make a difference.
I am not suggesting for a moment that anyone was speeding or driving dangerously in this incident, I hope everyone makes a full and speedy recovery.”

“I don't know what the reason for this accident was.
The speed limit is fine for this road in good conditions.
Although drivers who want to go faster are rightly condemned and I agree 100% with that.
I also feel that drivers who drive at speeds sometimes well below the limit causing tailbacks are also at fault.
It is no surprise really that motorways are the safest roads.
Some slow vehicles will pull over and let the traffic flow others do not.
I find when using this road on the few occasions no one is doing 30 mph in a 50 area in front of me and I am doing just below 50 no one overtakes.
Overtaking should be kept to a minimum on these roads but the reason we have roads is to move around reasonably swiftly within the speed limit not breaking it but keeping towards it in good conditions.”

“@Madeleine67, @HelenCW
Whilst agreeing that excessive speed and incorrect over-taking are major problems, I'd also like to criticize those people who drive way under the speed limit on dry roads. Doing 35mph in the 50mph/60mph zones is not acceptable and just adds to the risk of impatient drivers making poor decisions.”

“@safeandnice
I believe that today's incident took place close to the Apple Tree rather than in one of the more usual accident spots. The A48 was closed from Highnam to the Oakle Street junction (although, when heading North, police were diverting traffic off the road at Elton Corner).”

“You would be surprised at how many people actually mock those who stick to speed limits - I am in my mid forties and the majority of my friends seem to think it makes me an old fuddy duddy for sticking to speed limits - the worse road I have been on is just off the A48 - the A40 Highnam to Over road - which has 50mph signs all the way up - I have been tailgated here many times for sticking to the speed limit by abusive and agressive drivers - the minimum sentence for causing death by dangerous driving should be 10 years - how dare these idiots take risks with the lives of others.”

“I was horrified when I first starting using the A48 from Gloucester to the Forest of Dean 4 months ago and on going. The speed at which drivers go at along there and overtake at speed when really they only get in front by one or two cars before they have to slow down again before they take a risk again to overtake at speed and causing risks to all other drivers on both sides of the road.
I am a nurse and have seen the consequences that these irresponsible people do to themselves and their families - STOP SPEEDING AND USING MOBILE PHONES AT THE WHEEL.”

“Anyone know if this was the stretch near the Severn Bore again or further along?”
