OLD Centralians team manager Steve Preece hopes a simple clerical error has not ruined their chances of winning the South West One East title.

Cents misspelled the last name of winger Rich Preece in league documents for the fixture against Bletchley on December 8.

The Saintbridge men now face a potential five-point deduction which could all but end their hopes of a second consecutive promotion.

Cents currently sit second in the table, five points behind leaders Bracknell but with a game in hand on them.

However, a bonus-point win would send them level on terms at the summit.

A deduction in points could potentially cost them the title at the end of the season if the two sides continued to match each other win for win.

But team manager Preece is hopeful of a positive conclusion.

"We haven't heard anything surrounding the appeal yet but at the minute it is still going through," he said.

"We have spoken to Swindon who did the same thing but they were let off, so we are hoping that the same thing will happen.

"The league is almost a two-horse race between the two of us and it will be hard on us if it does go ahead.

"Even Bracknell have said that they don't want to win the title like that.

"It would be a shame to lose the title in that way just from a simple spelling mistake."
