ANDY MANGAN has given the clearest hint yet he plans to stay at Forest Green following the appointment of close friend David Brown as player-coach.

Rovers have confirmed that Brown, 30, will act as manager Jim Harvey's assistant next season after a successful transfer from Barrow in January.

He and top scorer Mangan played a key role in Rovers' escape from relegation, and it appears the partnership could be rekindled in 2009/10.

"He (Brown) can only make me a better player and I relish the opportunity of having him as my striking partner," said 30-goal striker Mangan, who is mulling over a new contract offer.

Brown, who began his career at Manchester United, said: "My priority at Rovers will be to continue playing and hopefully link up again with Andy Mangan to help him continue his blossoming career."

Meanwhile, ex-Rovers captain Lee Fowler has joined Blue Square Premier rivals Kettering Town.

The former Coventry City midfielder spent only one season at the New Lawn, skippering the club in January's famous FA Cup third round tie against Derby County.

He said: "Although we had good cup runs last season and started to pick up towards the end, as a team it was disappointing.

"Forest Green also played good football, but I want to be involved at the other end of the table and fighting for a Football League place."

Fowler follows goalkeeper Ryan Robinson and forward Les Afful through the exit door.

Fans' favourite Darren Jones has also told Harvey he will be leaving, with Hereford United his likely destination.

Along with Mangan, Forest Green have offered new deals to Mark Preece, Ben Ashford, Paul Stonehouse, Jonathan Smith and Conal Platt.

Jerry Gill, who acted as Harvey's number two last term while on loan from Cheltenham Town, will not now be returning to the club.
