Andy Mangan won the battle of the former Golden Boot winners as Forest Green Rovers beat Coca-Cola League One Charlton Athletic.

Mangan bagged a brace in the 3-1 success while former Rovers star Stuart Fleetwood, who started in the Addicks attack, drew a blank at the New Lawn.

Forest Green boss Jim Harvey started with the same team that defeated Hellenic League side Malmesbury Victoria 5-0 in midweek and his side made the perfect start as Mangan scored twice inside the first 25 minutes.

The line-up included Curtis McDonald at left-back with Paul Stonehouse, Conal Platt and Jonathan Smith working hard in midfield and Lee Ayres impressed in defence.

They held that lead until half-time and new signing Mike Fowler, recruited from Salisbury City on Friday, replaced Mark Preece to make his debut in the second period.

He made a couple of goal-chance denying tackles and looked composed on the ball, and it was not hard to see why the fans at his previous club rated him so highly.

Although the Addicks did not include a great number of first-team regulars, Rovers showed commitment, enthusiasm and played a more entertaining style than their higher-leagued opponents.

It was an impressive performance against a Charlton side who had five players who are expected to feature in the first team next season, including former MK Dons striker Izale Mcleod.

Defender Jonathan Fortune returned from injury, pulling on a shirt for the first time since January, and he came safely through the opening 45 minutes.

Charlton upped their game in the second half with Rovers goalkeeper Terry Burton having more to do and he produced one excellent save on 70 minutes, blocking a fierce shot from inside the box.

Chris Dickson pulled a goal back for the visitors 10 minutes from time following an misplaced pass by substitute James Baldwin in the Rovers defence.

But David Brown completed the scoring soon after, capitalising on a goalmouth scramble from a corner, to seal a famous victory for Rovers.
