IT'S goey, unbelievably chocolatey and rather higher in calories than the average sandwich.

So it's no wonder Mars bar toasties are making history at Gloucester Docks.

David Purchase, owner of On Toast, believes he is the only person in the country selling the choccy toasted sandwiches.

The unique snack is so popular that it has been a runaway success and he has sold 700 in seven months.

"You either love it or hate it," said David.

"A friend suggested I try it and when I tested it on friends and family the response was really good so I put it on the menu.

"I never thought that people would come in specifically for it, but they do."

The £1.60 toastie is so popular it sees the shop, in West Quay, go through 60 Mars bars a week.

The treat has long been a culinary favourite – and is served in deep-fried batter in chip shops in Scotland.

David said he loves experimenting with new flavours, and it's not the first or last time he will be putting chocolate in a sandwich.

His Easter Cream Egg toasties were a huge success, and he also plans a Christmas special. Coming soon will be Terry's Chocolate Orange with cranberry sauce.

LUCY'S VERDICT: "It is so sweet your teeth will ache by the time you've finished, but the Mars bar toastie is delicious."

“I am neither for nor against the plugging of this business on TiG, but I'd like to know what evidence anyone has come up with that David Purchase or his friends or relatives are making comments using pseudonyms. A bit of a case of the pot calling the kettle, er, black.”

“When will the mouthbreathers of Gloucestershire work out that we weren't slating local business, just the underhand promotion of it and the willingness of TiG to go along with this in lieu of actual news?

btw Emma - I wouldn't have an issue with him plugging his own business in plain sight. But to do it using pseudonyms is plain dishonest. Ask yourself - if you saw reviews for a place that said it was fantastic, and it turned out to be a cackhole, wouldn't you feel cheated? If his business is good enough it will turn out well through word of mouth, not dodgy astroturfing. Then again, what else could we expect from Dhanda's right hand man I suppose...”

“Yes - give toast a chance.
I applaud anyone who sets up their own business particularly one that has clearly not just leapt into doing so. I would only ever find myself feeling happy that someone is able to realise their ambition of setting up and then successfully running a business. And so what if the proprietor has used his initiative to 'plug' his own business. Hardly crime of the century.
All the negative and rather nasty attitudes have only prompted me further to arrange to meet mother for lunch there to try something a little different - the last place we went for lunch in Gloucester was somewhat lacking in the customer service department. I usually find smaller businesses more friendly, efficient and welcoming. I look forward to reporting back - how exciting.”

“honestly people of gloucestershire! do you have nothing better to do than slate a business for no apparent reason?! On Toast is a one of a kind cafe and until you actually go in and try a toasty, and a coffee if you can manage it, theres no reason to slate it. i studied TiG last year, and all you kind of people want to do is make an argument for no apparent reason, other than you have nothing better to do! grow up!”

“I guess so, but then I class a piece of carrot cake and a pint of strongbow as 2 of my five a day so Im probably not the best judge!”

“No Em, no mars bar toasties today or infact yesterday either - I actually had the egg and bacon, which upon reflection may also not be much better heart-wise but was delicious none-the-less.

They do offer the Mars on brown though so does this count as sort-of-healthy? :-)”
