Mehew keen to avoid the revenge attack from Trinity

REVENGE is a dish that could be served up in the cold of Whaddon Road tomorrow if Gloucester City aren't on their game against Blue Sqaure Bet North's form side Gainsborough Trinity.

The current cold snap could yet force the Tigers into a second week of inactivity, but City boss Dave Mehew is ensuring his players are prepared to play.

After a week off from training and games, City's players returned to training on Tuesday with a simple message from their manager to be prepared for a backlash.

City thumped Gainsborough 4-1 at the Northolme in November, a result that Trinity will be keen to avenge in Gloucestershire tomorrow.

That result almost marked a sea change in the Lincolnshire club's fortunes as new boss, the former Scunthorpe United midfielder Steve Housham has overseen a resurgence in form.

"Gainsborough are probably in as good, if not better form than us and they're on the verge of the play-offs as well so every game is vital for them," Mehew said.

"They will also be looking to get a bit of revenge for the 4-1 defeat we gave them up there earlier in the season.

"That was a funny night when we just got into the zone and scored four in 15 minutes.

"That doesn't happen every week, and I suppose it was just unfortunate for them that they caught us on that night.

"They won't need any further motivation after that result earlier in the season, we need to ensure that we're not rusty and hopefully the better team on the day will win the game."

While as yet unflustered about the possibility of a late-season fixture pile-up, Mehew is keen to get the show back on the road tomorrow.

With just 15 games remaining in the Blue Square Bet North campaign there is still plenty of time to fit fixtures in, but much to Mehew's frustration the enforced break has come at a bad time.

City have enjoyed a superb start to 2012 but if Saturday's game does fall foul of the weather, Mehew's men will have gone three weeks without a game by the time Vauxhall Motors visit next weekend.

"We're desperate to play Saturday as we've had our week off now and we're raring to go and want to continue our good form," Mehew said.

"This kind of thing happens every year now, the saving grace is that we're not already behind the rest with the number of games we've played.

"Guiseley are going to have a bit of a fixture pileup and Gainsborough will have to come to us on a Tuesday night if it's off.

"We've been able to train at Hartpury, we had a decent session on Tuesday night, we had a good hard session last week before the week-off and we got them going again this week.

"We worked hard last night as there is a doubt over the fixture and we need to keep the players ticking over, but there is no substitute for match action."

Matt Rose has been unable to train due to a slight knock and is a doubt if the game goes ahead, while a minor flu bug has gone through the camp in the past week, but Mehew expects everyone to have recovered by tomorrow.
