scheme are finally being realised with the framework for the new Morrisons supermarket going up.
The skeleton of the 71,300sq ft store being built by Barnwood Construction forms a new addition to the city's skyline. It represents a poignant milestone for the 30-acre site which has been derelict for 20 years.

Robert Kendall, project manager for the site, said: "The erection of the frame is a key milestone in the development process.
"It's also the first phase of the super structure (above ground works) and allows the cladding and roofing to be programmed. The next stage will be to get the shell water tight and commencement of pouring the floor slab.
"Barnwood have managed to keep the project on programme despite the poor weather of late and we still fully intend on handing the unit to Morrisons on the planned date."
A pub, restaurant, takeaways, car showroom, a new road junction of Metz Way and other business units are set to follow the supermarket and it is thought around 1,000 jobs will be created.
Adam Welland, contracts manager for Barnwood, said:
"Following the completion of the frame we will be starting roofing and installation of external finishes such as composite cladding, masonry walls and curtain walling."
Almost 300 tonnes of rubbish, including gas canisters, fridges, tyres and railway sleepers, was removed before work began. A planning application for a petrol station for the site has also been submitted.

“I hope it has wider aisles than the Morrison's at Up Hatherley, where annoyingly they put those metal wire dump bins halfway up the aisle so no-one can get past! If they are adding a petrol station too - looks like The Ridge & Furrow pub in Abbeydale will be staying open then.”
