City residents are shocked by the

closure of Millets in Southgate Street following the opening of Go

Outdoors at the old B&Q site in Barton Street. This follows the

closure of Blacks in Westgate Street after intense competition from

yet another "out of town" retail outlet with it's own on-site

"free" parking!

It is understood that Dragons' Den star Peter Jones has joined the bidders in the sale of struggling outdoor-equipment retailer Blacks Leisure in late 2011.

“The article may be slightly pathetic but it is accurate. Yet another example that people will not pay to park to go shopping.”

“Accessability to the shops is key. Compare the experience shopping at Milletts to Go Outdoors

    Shopping at Milletts

Drive to the City, park up without charge involves doing this in a dodgy area, and walking for miles to get to the shop, or getting hit by parking charges for the convenience of parking close by - and still feeling a bit vulnerable from having your car window knocked through, or astronomical prices in the multi storey car parks. Pay average prices at the till, and them have to carry the items for miles back to the car.

    Shopping at Go Outdoors

Drive to the shop, park for free outside the door, Pay average prices if not a card holder, get a reasonable discount if you are, carry goods back to car a few yards away, and drive off.”

“I'm a card carrying customer of Go Outdoors. I used to have to go to Bristol until they opened a store in Barton.
Free parking, heavy discounts and an awesome selection of goods coupled with the staff's boundless courtesy floats my boat / bike /tent / horse /(tick where applicable).”

“As someone who used to visit Milletts regularly, I am not surprised. Every time I went there they seemed to have less stock, carefully arranged to look like more. But it is not just Go Outdoors to blame for it's demise, there is a much wider selection at the row of outdoor shops in The Quays - and don't forget the Cragghoppers outlet in Debenhams.

Perhaps the final nail in the coffin was the especially long "closing down sale" at Black's which went on for months. Like everyone else, I stocked up on much of what I needed for the next few years (when the price was right) and as such had no need to visit Milletts over that period.”

“Small expensive store loses out to larger cheaper store. In other news, the Pope was seen kneeling with his hands clasped; and a bear was seen defacating in a heavily wooded area.”

“Sorry GlosAnarchy I don't work for either of them, I have to make every penny count in this difficult economic climate. And if that means that I need to shop around for my North Face jacket to save a tenner then I will. Sorry Milletts just to dear....”
