Mixed reaction to proposed Tesco in Churchdown
Around 200 residents attended a meeting on the proposed new Tesco store in Churchdown last night.
CATS (Churchdown Against Tesco Site) action group held the meeting at St John’s Church Hall on Monday night to discuss the proposed foodstore at the former Hurrans Garden Centre in Cheltenham Road East.
-

The meeting was chaired by Gordon Goodman, who lives in Church Road.
He said: “I am not against Tesco, I am against Tesco being at that site.
“It will threaten the village atmosphere. It will threaten the shops that we have here at the moment which is not on. I want these shops here when I grow old.”
Reactions were mixed though. One resident said: “I personally would welcome a Tesco store.
“It would give us a local shop at this end of the village which, at the moment, we haven’t got.”

“Lol...*Resident FOR Tesco, Churchdown*. I bet I know who YOU are.! Should you really be declaring such support I wonder?
I AM a CATS member along with a good dozen other Churchdown Residents. NO vested interest here I'm afraid, just a group of local residents not keen to see Tesco's on that site, that's all. Sorry to spoil your poor attempts at a smear campaign.!!!”

“Could it be that the vested interests of shops and commercial property owners is behind CATS? If those at the top of the village continue to support these shops the existance of Tescos at the bottom of the village for the benefit of all those who want competition with Co-op should not affect them. Leave people the freedom of choice!!”

“I'm looking forward to the new Tesco store being built, as I live very near to the site. My property backs on to what will be a pedestrian access from Stansby Crescent, which was also the main delivery access for large HGV bringing goods into the Hurrans store and it never caused us any problems then. The old garden centre was a large retail centre and in that sense nothing is changing except perhaps the extra hours opening. Bring it on, I can't wait !!”

“I don't live in Churchdown, so cannot comment re traffic, noise etc. HOWEVER, I am fed up with Tesco being everywhere. This is the reason for Tesco's popularity and not because it is cheap or sells particularly good quality products.
Bishop's Cleeve is the place nearest to me that has a supermarket, ie Tesco again, but I avoid it like the plague. I prefer Lidl with follow up shops at Waitrose and Sainsbury's in Cheltenham.”

“Chris, Gloucester - More congestion with a shop than with houses? Sounds like the guff people were spouting about the airport should be housing too!
Where are the people who move in supposed to go shopping? Co-op in St Johns? Please - way tooo expensive, when I was a student a small Tesco metro provided much better value for the essentials than any of the small-mid franchise outlets.”
