"Monstrous" home plans slammed
PLANS for a "fortress" of homes on empty land at Coopers Edge have been criticised by councillors in Hucclecote.
Concerns were raised about the next parcel of development on the former Brockworth airfield during a meeting of Hucclecote Parish Council on Monday night.

homes: The Coopers Edge land.
Persimmon Homes has applied to Tewkesbury Borough Council for approval to go ahead with the next 61 homes on the land.
More detailed plans were revealed for the site, near the Hucclecote Village Hall in Bird Road.
But although outline permission has already been granted, councillors said they were worried about the effect the houses would have on the existing parish.
Speaking at the meeting, vice-chairwoman Councillor Barbara Martin said: "I think it's horrible and I think it's outrageous.
"If you look at the local plan it says all developments must be in keeping with the surrounding area.
"These houses, these plots, are going to be part of Hucclecote parish and as such I think they should reflect what's been done here already."
Council chairwoman Pat Grant-Hudson said she agreed.
She said: "That sums it up.
"They (the homes) are absolutely monstrous."
Councillor Adrian Stalley, who lives close to the site, said he had three concerns.
He said he was worried about the two and three-storey buildings creating a "wall at the end of Bird Road" which would seal the development off from the rest of the parish.
He said: "I do think I represent the majority of people in Dryland Mews.
"Yes, we did know it was going to be built when we moved in, we can't argue with that, but we still object on three counts. There was never approval in the masterplan for houses bigger than two-and-a-half storeys."
Councillors also raised concerns about the problems the road around the site might cause.
They said commuters to the Gloucester Business Park could use it for free parking and make the area dangerous.
Members agreed to object to the planning application.
Tewkesbury Borough Council is due to make its decision later this month.
Coopers Edge is a being developed by a consortium of developers, including Barratt, Persimmon, Bovis, David Wilson, and People for Places.
The group is hoping to build more than 800 homes on the site in total.
The development will also include a school and other local amenities.

“Lobleys resident - With respect, you've got to concede that Lobleys Drive and the bridge were always intended to be opened up. The fact that it took them so long to do it has worked well in your favour for the last 25 years, but now it has happened, you can't really complain. Yes, there are some issues that need to be addressed; such as the Bay Tree Road junction, but this is only caused by careless drivers and less to do with the fact that everyone is using it as a 'rat run'. Saying that, I'm not sure why you use the term 'rat run', given the fact that you are probably more grateful than anyone else in Abbeymead for this new quick and easy route to the motorway/A417/Tescos/Brockworth.
K, Glos, Persimmon restarted building a while ago and have a few units finished already.
Rob, Brockworth. I remember when they finished that small utilities building at the bottom of the bridge. It wasn't even a week before its roof tiles were knocked off and its walls 'blessed' by well established artists of the moronic art movement. I think the creative parts of their brains have now been fully expended enough to allow for the fixing up of that building. I don¿t think they'd try it again with the now increased road traffic alongside anyway. The bright sparks that went through a phase of kicking in those bus shelters are thankfully bored of 'expressing themselves' as well. Could be something to do with the longer days we are enjoying now - less time of darkness between dinner and when mum shouts bathtime!
Onto the point about the state of the Coopers Edge development; Yes, I'd agree that it¿s untidy and a complete mess, but this is because of the recession and the builders leaving everything dormant for a year or so until they returned. I'm sure once its finished it will have a spruce up, but something tells me it will involve minimal quality and pride about it though.
People may think I'm being grumpy and moaning too much about this development, but the simple fact is that this development could have been so much more - and it really bugs me! Every time I drive past it I can't help but feel irritated at the developers, local government and the government in London. It could have actually benefited the City through raising the standard of housing in Gloucester, pushing up local house prices and appealing to young professionals and their families as a new and exciting reason to come here. Why it is that the developers advertise this new area as being in Cheltenham!? They¿re passing off substandard housing that won't ever compete with the style and architecture that is commonly associated with the name Cheltenham. This should be something that Brockworth and Hucclecote can be proud of, using designs and materials that sympathise with the characteristics of the local area, rather than reproduce the type of 'generic townhouse' that is popping up all over the country. Building anything more modern or urban simply won¿t work so close to the Cotswold escarpment. The architects have sold out their creativity to increase the profit margin, because they are under pressure from the construction industry and government.
The government is trying to fiddle recent housing problems by saturating the supply market with cheap new homes. This is a quick fix to try and get prices back down and provide for overpopulation. The result of all this is three storey blocks of ugly homes eating into our countryside, with no parking space or gardens, no green space and bolt on plastic chimney stacks. Whatever happened to building something to last and being proud of it?”

“I wish 'the bridge to no-where' remained still at Lobleys drive. The Coopers Edge rat run to Tesco and the A417 to Cirencester/Swindon/London has de-valued our houses along Lobleys Drive! It used to be used by a few dog walkers, now it's used hundreds of times a day by people avoiding Hucclecote rd & Barnwood rd. Grrrrr!
And I agree that Coopers Edge is such a mess.”

“The problem is that the roads won't be adopted by Gloucestershire Highways until the development is fully finished. Which means until then you'll have poor road surfaces, as the final "wearing course" presumably hasn't been laid yet, as this isn't usually done until the road is adopted?? So, the road gullies don't work properly, as they will have been installed level with the final road surface, but that isn't there yet.....
And even once the roads are adopted & the wearing course has been laid, will they then install double yellow lines along the main road through the area, and if they do will they actually be enforced...???
Sounds like the fun & games already being seen at Coopers Edge could well run & run (and get gradually worse...) for a while yet.....”

“I say let 'em build the fortress - it will help keep out all the rough lot from Abbeydale and Abbeymead.

“"They said commuters to the Gloucester Business Park could use it for free parking and make the area dangerous."
I work on GBP - and believe me, we don't need any more parking! The designers of the units there, for once, got it right - and we have loads of space.
Having seen how tight the roads/parking areas are on Coopers Edge, I'm more worried about the residents using our car parking spaces!”

“Yes to double yellow lines all along the main rat run thru Coopers Edge. That will made the lazy residents from the terraced townhouses who clog up the road in the evenings park where they should do & use their garages for their cars not piles of junk my neighbours do.”

“The un-finished nature of the estate is worse than Kingsway - and that's saying something!
And don't anyone dare say it will be OK when it's finished... the rate the houses are being built on Coopers Edge it will still be a 'development' in 10 years time!
Just take a look at the well kept landscaping around Tesco/Fortis/Direct Wine/ex-Wincanton depot/NHS buildings..... then look at Coopers edge. Chalk and cheese.”

“"They said commuters to the Gloucester Business Park could use it for free parking and make the area dangerous."
Really? They'll have to fight for spaces with the residents who all seem to park on the road, even on corners.
I can't wait for the day they paint double yellow lines down the entire stretch of road (or for the subsequent outcry in The CItizen from "horrified" and "distraught" residents).”

“Glad I don't live there - when you drive from Lobleys Drive into Coopers Edge it's like going into wasteland - there is a building with vandalised roof tiles that has been like that for over a year, broken trees, road edges all un-finished, piles of top-soil that has just been left to grow weeds on it, unkept bus-stops. Then when you drive along the row of horrid 3 story houses that already look scruffy after just 2 years you have that daft sharp left then the road is so narrow to get to the nice tidy & well landscaped industrial estate (shouldn't it be the other way round!)
Haven't the council learn't anything from Abbeymead Avenue? The main road through Coopers Edge should have been two lanes like it is around Tesco!
With Coopers Edge in it's current dreadful messy un-kept state I won't be spending £200,000+ on a house there.”

“I don't think the developers could have made the existing beige blocks of 3 storey town houses at Coopers Edge look any worse - they remind me of a prison!”
