A SUPERMARKET in Up Hatherley has renewed its bid to build an extension.

Morrisons is seeking permission from Cheltenham Borough Council to expand its store in Caernarvon Road.

The retail giant first pitched the plans in November, but scrapped them after parish councillors and traffic experts criticised a proposal to install another entrance in Up Hatherley Way.

Morrisons has now submitted a compromised version of the original plans without the extra entrance.

In its planning statement, the supermarket says the changes will also increase the number of parking spaces.

Parish councillors said it would only be a matter of time before a serious accident occurred if the original plans for a new entrance had been approved last year.

But Peter Worsley, chairman of the council's highways group, said he had no problems with the actual extension.

Borough councillor David Hall raised concerns that the car park, which has no time limit, is being used as a virtual park and ride scheme for residents wanting to catch buses into the centre.

“Why is it that the parish council can never think outside the box. The existing exits are where the problems are as anyone trying to exit and turn right will know. A third exit would ease the pressure on the two existing exits and the safety issue could easily be dealt with by having the new exit on to a new mini roundabout, to slow traffic. Problem solved and it adds a safe exit to the car park..”
