MOTORISTS in Up Hatherley are in for a headache over the next six weeks due to roadworks on a busy route.

Temporary traffic lights are going to be set up in Hatherley Road due to utilities work which will start tomorrow and continue until March 15.

It looks set to cause delays on the road – with the signals in place throughout the six-week period.

Stuart Fowler, chairman of Up Hatherley parish council, said despite their misgivings residents would have to cope.

He said: "We have known about this for some time and I'm afraid if the work needs doing there's not much we can do to avoid some disruption.

"It is already a busy road, so it is not ideal the work is going on for such a long time.

"However, we have tried hard to get rid of some of those who use it as a rat-run to avoid Lansdown Road at busy times.

"So despite some concerns about the impact of this work, we will have to grin and bear it.

"We have every faith that the work needs to be done and so hopefully in the long run the disruption will be worth it."

Lewis Edwards, holding manager at the Hatherley pub, in Hatherley Road, said he expected the scheme would cause some disruption.

"It's not ideal," he said. "We do get very busy here and it can get quite chaotic at school pick-up time when you've got cars coming in as parents come to collect their kids.

"So having temporary traffic lights up for such a long time is not going to be fun."

The disruption is to enable Severn Trent water company to install a water mains replacement.

Works will start at the junction of Harrington Drive and Warden Hill Road tomorrow before moving along the entire length of the road at different points throughout the six-week period.

Severn Trent apologised for any inconvenience caused by the work and thanked residents in advance for their patience.

For any inquiries about the work contact the company on 0800 783 4444.

“Simon Fowler says of hatherley road "However, we have tried hard to get rid of some of those who use it as a rat-run to avoid Lansdown Road at busy times"

Really ? Where is there any deterrent traffic calming in hatherley road. Every time anything constructive is proposed, some residents seem go out of their way to block anything useful being done. Mr Fowler needs to make more of an effort.”
