A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman’s body was found at a house in Longlevens.

Last night residents spoke of their shock after hearing the 51-year-old’s body had been discovered in a property in Innsworth Lane on Sunday.

A 56-year-old man, from Churchdown, has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Dawn Chater, of Innsworth Lane, said: “I was at home all day and I didn’t hear anything at all. It is awful that she has died.

“It is just terrible. I am really shocked.”

The woman’s body was found in a property on the Longlevens side of the bypass at around 11am.

Another Innsworth Lane resident, who refused to be named, said she was also stunned by the news.

She said: “I am really shocked. You just don’t think of that sort of thing happening around here.

“I hadn’t heard anyone had died but it is terrible, she was only 51 which is no age at all.

“I would like to send my love to her family, what terrible news for them.”

The woman's family and the coroner have been informed.

Gloucester city councillor Jim Porter (Con, Longlevens) said: “I hadn’t heard anything about it but I am shocked to hear the news and very saddened by it.”

Gloucestershire police said they were investigating the death, which a spokeswoman described as “unexplained”.

A police spokeswoman said: “Police are currently investigating the unexplained death of a 51-year-old local woman whose body was found inside a residential address in Innsworth Lane, Gloucester, at 11.20am on Sunday, March 7.

“A 56-year-old man from Churchdown was arrested on suspicion of murder.

“He has since been released on bail to return to Gloucester police station on May 3 pending further inquires.”

It is understood the cause of death is being treated as “unascertained” after a post mortem was carried out by a Home Office pathologist.

Police said they hoped to have more medical information today to help them determine what course the investigation would take.
