THE mystery of a hole within a hole is turning into a never-ending saga for Bewley Way residents in Churchdown.

Workman appeared in the quiet residential road in October and began digging a small hole.

Residents say that hole was filled in a few weeks later and another one dug a few feet away.

Alan Hopkins lives at number 11 and says a hole has been dug and filled in six times in the just three months.

"The hole first appeared in October," he said. "Two workmen turned up, dug a hole then disappeared.

"They returned to say there was nothing they could do with that hole, so filled it in a few weeks later and dug another one a few feet away."

Mr Hopkins went on holiday to Australia on December 13, expecting to return home to find the hole filled in and the pavement back to normal.

"I came back on January 16 and the hole was still there, I couldn't believe it," he said.

"It still hasn't been sorted out.

"It's a right mess and turning into a bit of a saga.

"Pedestrians have to walk into the road to avoid it and it looks as though the ground is unstable around it and it could cave in."

After inquiries were made to the county council highways department, responsible for resurfacing works, it was revealed repairs are being done by Severn Trent.

They have assured residents the work will be completed soon.

A spokesman for Severn Trent said: "We received a report of a hole which had appeared next to a manhole cover on Bewley Way in Churchdown.

"We went out to investigate and have since spoken to the council to understand the cause, who is responsible and when the repairs will be completed.

"In the meantime, we have secured the area with barriers and will be working with the council to make sure the repairs are completed as quickly as possible."
