WALKERS will be able to spread their wings on a rerouted footpath next to Gloucestershire Airport.

Staverton bosses have moved the route around the edge of the newly-extended runway.

The right of way linking Churchdown and the Old Cheltenham Road had been closed for a year until it was reopened on Tuesday.

The major project has also seen the installation of a culvert and creation of a new meander to Norman's Brook.

Bio-diversity

That work will sit alongside a number of bio-diversity schemes to enhance the natural habitat, including work to ensure trees have been preserved.

Churchdown tree warden Ann Smith said: "Initially, I had some concerns about the environmental impact of the project, but I'm very pleased with the results.

"The airport has worked hard to create an area of bio-diversity and I look forward to seeing the area flourish."

Mrs Smith has been helping the airport by overseeing the work and offering support on wildlife issues, including hedgerows.

Bosses at Staverton launched their runway safety plan last year in order to give more stopping distance for aircraft landing at the site.

Airport head of operations Darren Lewington said: "We're grateful for the advice we've received from Ann and reopening the footpath today is another milestone for the runway project.

"As walkers return to the path, we hope they'll agree that the work has been a sympathetic enhancement to the environment."

The move means planes using the site will be able to carry heavier loads and fly further, generating bigger fuel sales for the airport.

However, the expansion will not see larger aircraft, like those used by companies Ryanair and EasyJet, flying into the airport.
