A team has smashed the land speed record for an electric car, reaching nearly 150 miles per hour.

The Nemesis, driven by Nick Ponting, of Stroud, hit 151mph during a run at Elvington Airfield, near York.

The supercar is the brainchild of Dale Vince, founder of Stroud-based green electricity company Ecotricity. He said: "We built the Nemesis to smash the stereotype of electric cars as something Noddy would drive – slow, boring, not cool."

He added he hoped the new record would help stimulate a debate about how everyone would move around if the world ran out of oil. He said the Nemesis was capable of 0-100mph in 8.5 seconds and, on paper, is capable of topping 200mph.

Yesterday's run breaks the record of 137mph set by Don Wales, the grandson of speed ace Sir Malcolm Campbell, 10 years ago. But the achievement still needs to be ratified by the Motor Sports Association before the record can be officially declared.

Lord Paul Drayson, who runs Nether Lypiatt-based green technology motor racing team Drayson Racing, yesterday said: "Congratulations to Ecotricity on setting a new UK land speed record for electric vehicles today. Great stuff."

The Nemesis is powered by electricity generated by Ecotricity's network of 53 wind turbines.
