A NEW pub in Gloucester has been welcomed, after it was revealed the vast majority of jobs have gone to residents.

Marston's has opened up a new Barn Owl in Kingsway.

The boozer, which has a smart interior and opens seven days a week, has employed 40 staff, 37 of whom live on the Kingsway estate.

It followed calls from people in the area about a lack of amenities.

Barry Kirby, chairman of Kingsway Residents Association, unearthed the figure.

He said: "It is great for local employment.

"I think the true test will be seeing if the high standards they have set out with are still there in six months time.

"But given the investment they have put into it and the potential for the pub to be a regular haunt for the local community, then I think it will be a great asset to Kingsway."

He added: "The interior of the pub does look stunning.

"It is much bigger on the inside than it looks from the outside."

“Calling it a Boozer sounds like it is full of alcoholics, surely it would be better calling it a smart eating and drinking establishment.”

    “It's an interesting one Lecorche.
I know quite a few people who live in Kingsway and none of them include Quedgeley as part of their address.

The estate agents go with both!

    Unit 18, Kingsway Local Centre
    Thatcham Avenue
    Kingsway, Quedgeley

I think that it's now big enough to be it's own district and it's still growing.
There's a seperate residents association and I remember reading that there is a plan to have a seperate parish council.

“Rob, I think you'll find that Kingsway is a suburb of the suburb of Quedgeley.
    The school thinks so too.

“You can enjoy the wonders of a national pub chain with an inability to spell here:

Quite how a company manages to register a website, setup email addresses and put directions and the postal address on to the site without noticing they've spelt the location wrong is beyond me.

    Good work Marstons.
And it's in Kingsway.... Not Quedgeley.

    Stunning work.”

“They are locked into tabloid hell at TiG. Every pub is a 'boozer'. Anyone who uses a library is a 'bookworm'. Any youngster accused of crime is a 'yob'. Monosyllabic primitivism is their stock in trade - 'new pubs job joy', 'big cat', 'sad day', 'new look', 'pub woe', 'yob nab' etc etc.”
