Newent travellers stay at site despite notice to leave
TRAVELLERS remain at a site in Newent despite being told to leave over a week ago.
A planning inspector told travellers at Southend Lane, Newent, they could stay at the site until January 31 and then return it to grassland.
But a new planning application for caravan pitches has now been filed.
The travellers' planning consultant said it was prompted by Forest of Dean District Council failing to find another site.
At the time of going to press the travellers were still at the site.
A council spokesman said: "The Planning Inspector gave permission for the travellers to remain on site until January 31, 2012. As they remain on site there is now a breach of planning control and we are looking at whether it is expedient to take any formal action.
"Our decision will need to take into account all relevant material planning considerations and we have carried out a detailed site investigation to inform this decision.
"There have been a number of changes to relevant local and national planning policies since the inspector made his decision in 2010 and we are examining these to ensure that we have considered everything that is relevant in making any decision."

“Yes I have often stood in awe at their vehicles (albeit through gritted teeth). Free school meals? Well I hope they don't get Legal Aid as well because I will be right cheesed off! Backhanders...yes I can well believe that.”

“2ladybugs- I think you will find it is not so much some people being above the law, rather some people having enough cash ( literally) to buy them all this legal tom-foolery. I hope that anyone seriously interested in this sort of situation will visit the Lane, to admire the types of vehicle they drive- such a shame that they have to claim free school meals for their children!- and google Matthew Green who regularly openly threatens councils if they fail to approve sites he is putting forward. Not that he is concerned, as he gets paid cash in hand......I am sure he declares it..!”

“I have just read what Lecorche says about it being illegal to clamp them. So it is alright for travellers, Occupy groups etc. to break the law but not the rest of us. Unbelievable!”

“I know it was contoversal to say clamp them but thats what would happen if you were parked illegally. BTW ladybug, I've been stalked by worse people ;o) Lecorche, you're probably right but if you were to park something on your own driveway that the council didn't like I bet they soon make you move it.”

“Douglas,
The Beeb reports these people as having bought the land in 2009.
Does the Council have the right to throw them off?
There'd certainly be no advantage in clamping them. It may be against the law.anyway.”

“@Douglasknows
Looks like I'm stalking you :{
Yes that thought had crossed my mind but on reflection I fear they might just have some tools of the trade which would cut through these minor obstacles ;-((”

“If they are on the land illegally then why not clamp all the vehicles and only release them when they have paid the fine and agreed to leave.”
