Night market for Independence Day
Gloucester – with it's strong links with the United States – is holding its first ever night market on American Independence Day.
It is a coincidence rather than a tribute to the founding of the 'New World' as the city stages the event as part of its support of the national 'Love your local market' campaign.

July 4th will see 40 stalls in King's Square from 5.00pm – 10.00pm – all provided free of charge by the City Council to a variety of budding business people and entrepreneurs.
There will be arts, crafts, food, fashion and even physiotherapy on offer to shoppers and visitors.
It will be supported by an extensive range of evening entertainment reflecting the city's diverse culture. It will include steel drums, asian dance, eastern European music and dance, Egyptian dance, reggae, lindy hop and 60's music. And to keep in with the American theme – a New York blues singer.
Council Leader, Paul James, commented: " We have a market tradition that goes back to our original charter of 1155AD. We are proud of that and proud of the many people who are striving to maintain a vibrant small business sector in the city.
" We want to do all we can to support them in their efforts and the idea of the night market is a great boost to our evening economy in the summer."
He added: " It is a coincidence that this is being staged on July 4th – but a fitting one. We have a number of ties and associations with the USA of which we are very proud."
