A ONE man crimewave who has made 36 court appearances since he committed his first offence at the age of 13 has finally been jailed.

Callum Smith's latest crimes included a ram-raid in Winchcombe and an attack, in which a man's face was slashed, Gloucester Crown Court was told.

Smith, 21, has already been handed several anti-social behaviour orders (Asbos) since his offending began.

He was jailed for two years and two months after he admitted a catalogue of offences.

Judge Paul Dugdale said: "You have a very poor record for a 21-year-old man and it is a great sadness to see someone of your age with this record in the crown court facing an inevitable prison sentence.

"You have been given opportunities for rehabilitation, supervision orders and community punishments and all have failed.

"Your offending this time has been so serious it crosses the custody threshold. There comes a time when a court has no choice than to send offenders like you to prison.

"I acknowledge you have had problems in your life and you have a long-term addiction to opiates.

"This was a significant quantity of offences over a period of time, all of them occurring while you were subject to an Asbo and three of them occurring while you were on bail."

Smith admitted unlawfully wounding Jack Cullis on May 5, burgling a filling station with intent to steal and aggravated vehicle taking.

He also admitted two Asbo breaches, driving without due care, without insurance or a licence and he asked for six thefts to be taken into consideration.

Lisa Hennessy, prosecuting, said Smith had received an Asbo – his second – in May 2008. It banned him from driving or riding in any vehicle unless accompanied by a parent or official such as a social worker.

However, on January 26 this year at 10.30pm he pulled out in front of a police car while driving a Renault Megane in Malvern Road, Cheltenham.

On January 28, Smith took a Vauxhall Frontera without consent from a garage at Kingsditch and drove it to a petrol station in Winchcombe, Mrs Hennessy said.

He then used the car to try to smash his way into the station, causing £10,000 damage to the building.

Nothing was taken and police later found the vehicle abandoned on Cleeve Hill with Smith's mobile phone, bail notice and a spot of his blood in the car.

Smith was arrested on January 29 in Bishop's Cleeve and was bailed again only to commit the most serious offence, wounding Mr Cullis, said the prosecutor.

She said the incident happened on May 5 when Mr Cullis went to Smith's home to collect a bicycle and the "atmosphere turned sour".

Kannan Siva, defending, described Smith as "a young man who has been led astray".

Smith had managed for months at a time to make progress on past orders but had gradually fallen into a pattern of escalating crime, he said.

"He has made genuine efforts to overcome what has been a long-standing drug addiction," Mr Siva said. He said Smith had reacted in a "spontaneous and reckless manner".

“Surely the law is also guilty of acting in a 'reckless manner' by not being tougher with this criminal beforehand.
I feel really insulted that so many thousands of pounds and wo/man hours have been afforded to this man.
theft. aggrivated theft (Charming!) , thousands of pounds of damage that he will never have to repay, driving offences bla bla bla.

At least I know I can safely educate my children that whaever they do - they wont have to serve any meanginful punishment for at least a decade so they may as well stick their fingers up to society and run amok...it ok - it's the law.

Drugs or no drugs, people DO know the difference between wrong and right... as he has been led astray he therefore has the ability to be led into honesty??”
