Novelist Jilly Cooper blasts incinerator as 'assault on rural heritage'

“As much as I like Jilly Cooper, celeb name dropping won't help a fig, she should be speaking either for herself or all people of Glos.
What is very serious is how on earth the Council were able to commit £15m of rate payers money without us knowing about it. The project will have to go ahead due to the penalty clause, we need an inquiry into how this happened and to stop it from happening again, the members of the committe involved should be voted off.
I am not against the use of incinerators being used to burn all our rubbish, saving huge amounts of money spent by Councils to pay for the use of landfills.
Germany and Mallorca have been using this system for many years, Mallorca have one outside of Palma with limited fumes, providing 25% of their electricity. They don't have bins for each house, they provide large ones at the end of each street which people dispose of rubbish each day then the bins are emptied each night then taken directly to the incinerator.
Obviously the UK would need far more, allocate one to each county based on individual size. I have written several times over the last 10 years to main political parties suggesting they take a
small work party to investigate how efficient it can be done.
The use of incinerators is not if but when and how, the location could be on an industrial site. This will save a huge amount of money for councils enabling them to spend on repairing schools and in Glos on repairing the worst roads I have ever seen, most of all reduction on household bills.
If enough people write to their MP requesting they speak on the subject in the House of Commons the Government should make a clear decision on the subject, stopping other members of the public being ripped of like the people of Glos.”

“What type of a council awards a massive contract with a £15 million penalty PRIOR TO GRANTING PLANNING CONSENT? That makes me very suspicious that they are either extremely incompetent or there is an element of corruption. By doing this, they are forcing this upon the public without the chance for them to raise a successful campaign against it because to do so and win would cause all that council tax payers money to be wasted. It is an absolute scandal.
Perhaps the question should also be asked if councils ought to be able to approve their own planning applications as this opens the door to the possibility of extremely dodgy deals going on.”
