INTRODUCING regional pay and conditions in the NHS would lead to lower standards of patient care, says the Royal College of Nursing.

Scrapping the national agreement on terms and conditions in a bid to save money and jobs is the "wrong solution" to the challenges trusts are facing, the union said.

The RCN issued the warning after 20 trusts in the south west, including Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and 2gether NHS Foundation Trust, joined a consortium considering a regional approach to cut costs.

The hospitals trust said it would carefully consider any proposals developed by the consortium, take an independent view, then decide.

“Mention money and the unions always say that it will lead to poorer care, same old, same old.”

    “Lecorche...............................same house, same costs?.......I don't think so.
There are regional variations, and those should be reflected in pay.
However, it obviously should be from the top down, or not at all.”

“Here we go again. Many comments on this site but where where you all when there was an opportunity to make a protest at the hospital? 20,000 signatures but no one prepared to stand up and be counted. Poor show. Either this is important, in which case people should be visibly against it, or it's just unions making a stand against employer/employee changes set to save money for the NHS. If its the latter then count me out, the Unions are dinosaurs living in a bygone age and acting as a second set of bosses to the staff.”

“We are judged as a society by how we value the most vulnerable in it - and those that care for them. Ah yes, forgot - we value the bankers more so have to pay them the most....”

“Let's not get into debates about public sector pay, the issue is far bigger than that.
The Gloucestershire public need to back the RCN and other unions on this issue. The future of our local health care provision is at stake, which affects everyone who uses the NHS.”

Will the "managers" who are driving this be taking regional pay for themselves.”

“It makes sense to relate wages to cost of living, or bring in lower wages all round with additional allowances to cover cost differential particularly housing, or allocate housing paid for by the employers - whatever you look at the situation, national pay bargaining tends to the worst lot to high cost areas.”
