Paralympic star Ellie Simmonds visits EDF Energy at Barnwood

SHE was the face of London's Paralympics and yesterday Gloucester workers queued to meet her for real.

Ellie Simmonds, the 17-year-old swimmer who scooped two gold medals for Team GB and set a new 400m freestyle world record, arrived at EDF Energy's Barnwood site.

The company's 1,600 workers on the site rallied behind the Paralympics, with many fundraising for the Paralympic GB team.

A total of £300,000 was raised nationally.

Ellie, who was joined by her mum Val at the offices, told The Citizen: "It has been a momentous year.

"To get the whole of the public behind the Paralympic movement has been amazing.

"When you hear that roar from the crowds whilst you are competing, it really boosts you and gives you a huge advantage.

"It is nice to have everyone's support here, knowing that they have raised so much money for the cause."

Ian Dixon, supply chain executive for EDF, said: "There has been a huge queue of people wanting to speak to Ellie about her achievements.

"We have all seen her on the TV and so it is quite surreal to have her in the room with us.

"Some of us were lucky enough to go to the closing ceremony and it was truly inspirational. We wanted to harness some of that here by raising as much money as we could."
