THE Olympic Torch is coming back to Gloucestershire.

With the carnival-like scenes of the torch relay coming through Gloucestershire last month now a happy memory, Chipping Campden is gearing up for its own Olympics party.

Local councils are writing to residents and businesses, informing them of the arrangements for the day and advising people wishing to view the torch relay to get to their vantage points in good time as large crowds are expected.

Volunteer stewards will be in the town to ensure spectators’ safety and to give advice and information.

Cllr Antonia Noble, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Olympic planning, said: “This is the last time that the torch will be in Gloucestershire and it will be wonderful for local people to take part in the celebrations. And as it’s on a Sunday, lots of families will be able to enjoy it together.

“Chipping Campden is always busy at weekends at this time of year and numbers will be swelled by visitors wanting to catch a glimpse of the torch as it passes through. I hope that local businesses will benefit from the extra trade that the torch relay will bring.”

Organisers of the Robert Dover Cotswold Olimpicks, which is celebrating its 400th anniversary this year, have arranged for past and present local Olympians to parade through the town ahead of the torch relay.

The parade will assemble at 10.30am on Dover’s Hill before proceeding for a mile down Dyer’s Lane where it will be met in the town centre by the mayor for a reception.

Clive Thompson, vice-chairman of the Cotswold Olimpicks, said: "I look forward to hearing from county Olympians - competitors not just medallists - wanting to join this informal parade.

“The route of the Olympic torch relay is not actually taking in Dover’s Hill itself so we thought we would like to repair that link.

“Having celebrated the 400th anniversary of the first Olimpicks on 1 June, we want to give something back by letting the county's Olympians have a chance to show we are proud of them. It should be inspiring to see a parade of Olympians young and old.”

There are currently six Olympians who will be parading through the town but more are welcome. Any former Olympians wishing to take part, should contact Clive Thompson on 01386 840 270 or email clivecarol@googlemail.com

Roads through the town will be closed for up to two hours before the torch is due to pass through.

There will also be a knock-on effect on surrounding roads and delays should be expected.

Details of temporary road closures and additional information can be found at Gloucestershire.gov.uk/olympictorchrelay
