Oops there's a bus shelter blocking my driveway
A MAN was stunned to find his driveway had been blocked – when a bus shelter was suddenly erected outside his home.
Steve Elvey, 30, was shocked when he came home on Wednesday and found the shelter in front of his driveway at Secunda Way, Hempsted.
He said: "I was driving up the road and I could see the bus shelter and I thought, 'no they couldn't have put it by the dropped kerb to get into my driveway'. But as I got closer I found that this bus stop had been put right in front of my access. It was beyond belief."
Mr Elvey, who lives with his wife Esther, 29, in Mayfair Close which backs onto Secunda Way, said he was so furious that he took matters into his own hands.
The electrical engineer said: "I went to the council and they said it had been put up by Adshel so there was lots of to-ing and fro-ing to try and get it sorted.
"I then decided I had had enough and so I decided if they wouldn't take it down I would."
Police were called and he showed them his access rights.
"They said for me to wait for it to be removed by the company. But as we were talking someone crashed on the other side of the road as they were rubber necking at what was going on."
Gloucestershire Police confirmed they went to Secunda Way at around 4.10pm after reports of a disturbance at a newly-erected bus stop, but no further action was taken.
A spokesman said no one was hurt in the accident.
Clear Channel, which has more than 45,000 Adshel panels nationally, apologised for the mistake and the bus shelter was removed yesterday.
Mr Elvey added: "I am glad it has now been moved. But we are having cutbacks and people are suffering at the moment so putting this in the wrong places really concerns me."
A Clear Channel spokesperson said: "As soon as the council informed us the bus shelter had been installed in the wrong place we arranged to have it moved.
"Within 24 hours we restored access to the driveway and we apologise for any inconvenience caused during that time."

“I can't see why it should matter whether the driveway isn't used very often. If the man has rights of access to his land then it should not matter how often he uses it.
The gate may be partly hidden but you can still see it and surely the contractors would have noticed that the kerb had been dropped, they don't just do that for no reason!”

“I drove past the bus shelter today and have every sympathy for the people who put it in the wrong place. The wooden gate doesn't look like it has been used in years and is, in part, obscured by the hedge. If you you click the left arrow button under the picture you'll see what I mean (there are actually two pictures on this report). I would say this was more a secondary back entrance to the property rather than a driveway and one which isn't used that often.”

“Kay, I'm almost certain that bus shelters are not exempt from planning rules - particularly when their primary function is advertising: the name 'AdShel' is a bit of a clue here. If there wasn't a planning notice then oh dear. Someone's fouled up.
Incidentally, I can't see any sign of a driveway or dropped kerb in the photographs. But I do see a Bus Stop sign. Perhaps the photographs are of the shelter in its revised location.”

“Nogman,
I don't recall ever having seen a planning application for a bus shelter, and I am someone who keeps an eye on planning applications. I wonder if bus shelters are exempt from planning rules.”

“Adshel, proof that private companies are just as good as public ones ;-)
Did this gang have anything to do with the football pitch in York?”

“I'm thinking the only mistake was that they thought they'd get away with it.
Didn't Mr Elvey see the planning notice? I'm sure there would have been one. Or maybe the shelter was described as something else.
18 months ago, Cheltenham High Street became blighted with gaudy, ugly, noisy scrolling advertising signs. I didn't notice the planning notices, but I'm sure they would have said something like 'To replace electrical cabinets with advertising posters'. Ok, an electrical cabinet is about a metre tall, quiet and fairly inoffensive. Surely they would be replacing them with something similar? No, the reality is about 3 metres high, illuminated and scrolling every few seconds. Apart from the loss of visual amenity, the constant droning of these machines at night is a real source of irritation. Anyone notice the 10 lifesize plastic horses that are planned to decorate Cheltenham?”

“The funniest bit, is the Advert in the bus shelter. Bet it didn't give Steve Elvey "a smile"”

“The contractors must have been just following orders. You can't expect them to think for themselves and question why they have been told to construct a bus shelter across a driveway!”
