Work to repair the damaged section of the A419 at Stonehouse will begin on Monday.

As part of Gloucestershire County Council’s Operation Road Rescue, around 3,500m2 of road between Chipmans Platt - the Little Chef Roundabout, and Oldends Lane - the turning to Nastend will be resurfaced in a £100,000 scheme.

The damage was so severe that emergency pothole repairs had to be carried out straight after the big freeze to prevent the road from being closed but now a full resurfacing scheme has been drawn up to complete the work.

Councillor Stan Waddington, cabinet member for environment, said: “This is a major scheme and one that we have decided to carry out as a priority.

“This section of the A419 was very badly damaged during the cold weather and as it is such a busy commuter route, work had to be completed as soon as possible.

“As part of our Operation Road Rescue campaign we have diverted 30% extra highways staff into dealing with repairs so we have 70 gangs out on the streets repairing the damage.

“Repairing the roads is a top priority for Gloucestershire County Council and I want to reassure people that we are doing everything possible to fix our roads.”

To minimise congestion there will be three consecutive overnight road closures starting at 8pm on Monday February 8 with the road reopening each morning by 6am.

Whilst the road is closed at night, two diversion routes will be in operation - one diversion route for light vehicles and another for heavy vehicles.

Both diversion routes will be clearly signposted.

“I really wish Stann Waddington would grow some integrity and admit the damage was not done "during the cold weather " but when the Highways Department decided to do a bad job of laying and patching the original surface.
The damage may have become apparent during the cold weather but it was done long before.”
