Parking charges good value says Gloucester leader

A controversial decision to increase residents' parking permits in the county has been defended by the leader of Gloucester City Council.

Councillor Paul James told The Citizen the steep hike announced last week – from £62 a year to £80 – would help control the take-up rate.

Last week, the county council confirmed that permits would be frozen by 2010 before rising to £72 in 2011 and then £80 by 2012.

The decision will hit Gloucester hard, as it has one of the highest take-up rates in the county.

Mr James said: "Clearly the rise is above inflation but I still think permits give good value for money when compared to other parking.

"Also there is often an issue with demand in off-street parking in some places. Some places can get parking permits, but there is no guarantee of getting a space, so if the rise helps control demand for people who will think before buying them then it would be good too."

The policy will also allow the county council to extend permit operation times from 6pm in the evening until 8pm – and to Sundays – in specific places.

Mr James said: "I think they still represent good value for money and I can understand the whole standardisation of charges across the district as it makes sense that everyone will be paying the same rate for a parking permit wherever they live in Gloucestershire."

People driving the most environmentally-friendly cars will be able to get half-price permits. The city council offers a list of the cars deemed to be planet-friendly.

The changes will be in force from next month, or from the next time residents renew their permits.

“Paul (lets pull the Bandstand down in the early morning, because no one will notice) James as deluded and in top form as ever. This man has clearly been reading the 'How to spin a news story in 3 easy steps' manual. No wonder our City is falling apart on all counts.”

“Sleep well at night Mr James do you? I think the local planning are in cahoots with the builders. If they force car parking spaces for the homes it would mean less houses being built and less council tax. This way they also get parking fees so it's win/win for the council. Don't patronise people with the 'good value' comment sir, just tell the truth.”

    “What the @*$#!!
High take up rate because high percentage of people have cars, where would he like us to put them exactly? I know it's not a given right to park outside your front door but it would be nice to park it somewhere.
This man's an idiot. And probably parks right outside his front door everyday and not have to worry about trudging around the streets of Glos with armfuls of shopping bags because he can't park anywhere near his house.
My wage will not be increasing by £18 so where am I going to get it from? Cut down on food? Electricity? Gas? Water? Money's got to come from somewhere.
The sooner we get rid of this man and his twisted sense of 'value for money' the better I will feel.”
