PARKING attendants have received praise from parents at a Gloucester primary school.

The uniformed public servants, normally vilified for their unpopular work stamping out breaches of parking rules in Gloucester, have been keeping the peace at Linden Primary School.

The action came after complaints from the school and from parents about some drivers parking around the site in an obstructive manner.

Parent Emma Beddis said: "I would like to thank the traffic wardens that attended Linden Primary School this week, it has made a great difference. Please could you continue to visit regularly?

"We currently, like most schools, have a problem with parents parking to drop off and pick their children up.

"Due to limited parking and more parents driving there is a lack of sensible places to park, therefore some just park anywhere with no regard to the safety of other children."

Head teacher Angela Jarvis praised the wardens, and the police officers for the area, who she said were always on hand to help.

She said: "As with most schools in built-up areas, you do unfortunately get problems with parking.

"The officers have been brilliant, and so have our PCSOs, they help us out with a lot."

She said the visit of the officers had served as a reminder to parents.

She said: "It reminded them that what they were doing was bad for children.

"We just don't want to have to wait until a child is hurt before people stop parking badly."

A spokesman for Gloucester City Council said: "When we know there are key times and places where parking restrictions are being flouted we can work with the police to ensure our traffic enforcement offices and the police have a presence.

"This not only deters unsafe parking but they can also advise regarding safe parking practices."

“Sadly very true Kay. It's the same story around St Pauls - pavements blocked, cars parked on corners - the usual stuff. It really needs a combined police/council exercise to actually fine these people,if only to remind them that they are in the wrong. However,it will not happen,as the interest isn't there.
Let people get away with something for long enough and they get the idea that it's now o.k.”

“Just how will he culprits be dealt with? It's not actually an offence, so no parking ticket can be issued. Only parking on yellow lines can be dealt with by enforcement officers from the council; and only obstruction can be dealt with by the police, and they won't even do anything about cars parked on pavements, let alone in the road outside schools.”

“Anyone who sees a car being parked outside a school during picking up/dropping off time, especially if it seems to be a regular ocurrence, should report the registration number and make/colour to parkingadmin@gloucester.gov.uk. They will pass the information on to their enforcement officers, and eventually, the culprits will be dealt with.

Not only did a post office worker do this three times last week, he also left a 6-7 year old girl sitting in the car while he went in to pick up another child.”

“Well done to the parking officials for doing what they are paid by us to do. Anyone ever tried reporting a parking issue on a weekend ? The council have an enforcement policy as long as it fits within a civil servants 9 to 5 hours Monday to Friday, otherwise park where you want.”

“Just how long will this crackdown last? Anyway, I have it straight from the horse's mouth that zig-zag lines outside schools are not enforceable unless there are also double yellow lines!”
