A GROUP of animal rights campaigners say they will continue to put pressure on restaurants in Cheltenham which sell the controversial pate foie gras.

Demonstrators pitched up outside Armagnac restaurant, on Rotunda Terrace, in the Montpellier area of the town centre, for two hours on Saturday.

Foie gras, which is produced by force-feeding geese to create a rich liver pate, is illegal to produce in the UK but can be imported.

Nicola Dyer, who organised the demonstration, said they were hoping to raise awareness among Cheltenham residents and to persuade Armagnac's owner, Gloucester Rugby player Olivier Azam, to stop selling the produce.

Dan Richards, head chef of Armagnac, said the restaurant intended to carry on selling the dish.

“I agree with raising some awareness as I¿m sure not everyone who has eaten this knows what it is, but if Armagnac¿s customers didn¿t eat it and there was no money in it for the restaurant then they wouldn¿t sell it. So clearly people want it and so they should as it tastes great! :)”
