ELECTRICIANS are taking to the sky in a bid to protect customers from potential hazards.

Western Power Distribution (WPD), the electricity distribution company serving Gloucestershire, is carrying out helicopter patrols across the county as part of its network inspection work across the winter period.

The helicopters will be in the sky above Cheltenham to spot potential hazards on the high voltage overhead network and to highlight areas where future work may be needed. They will also on the lookout for any damage caused by recent storms.

Phil Allen, logistics manager at Western Power, said: "Using a helicopter to carry out the patrols is the safest, fastest and most effective way to carry out checks on large sections of the network.
