Pay and display in Linden?

A PAY and display system could be introduced in Linden soon, according to the results of a parking review.

The review has been held in the Moreland ward, which includes Linden, during the last few months in response to issues raised by residents.

People have reported major problems with commuters and shoppers parking outside homes and blocking streets, and there are also issues with too many yellow lines and pavement build-outs.

The findings of the review have now been published by Gloucestershire County Council.

Proposals for the north of the Linden area, near the city centre and Gloucester Quays, are to introduce pay and display in some locations to manage parking, and also to introduce permit parking.

In the south of the area the plan is to remove existing yellow line restrictions where possible to create additional space for parking and to review the build-outs.

Councillor Mark Hawthorne, leader of the council and local county councillor, said: "All of these proposals are purely suggestions at this stage so we need your feedback to determine if this is the right way to go.

"Everyone affected is invited to attend informal drop in sessions to take a closer look at what we're proposing and tell us what you think.

"It's really important that you give us your views because ultimately whatever we do will affect you, the people that live there, in the long run."

Councillor Mark Hobbs (Lab. Moreland) said: "I think the pay and display will help some residents but I am pleased to see there is not a blanket pay and display all over the area.

"However I am disappointed that they are continuing to review the build outs.

"I have been calling for a review of them for the past three years. I would like to see the majority of them removed as believe it would make life easier for a lot of people."

Drop-in sessions will be taking place in August for people to find out more about the proposals and give their feedback on them at the same time.

At the drop-in sessions, people will be able to view detailed plans and officers will be on hand to answer any questions they have.

Lyn Ackroyd, former chair of the Moreland Community Partnership, said: "I would really encourage people to go along to the sessions.

"None of this is set in stone and there is still time for people to have their say on the options available. I know some people want on street parking and others don't."

The drop in session will be held on Tuesday August 10 between 12.30pm and 7pm at St Pauls Primary School in New Street, and on Tuesday, August 24, between 5.30pm and 8pm at Star 66 centre, in Seymour Road.

If people are unable to attend either session, they can still have their say by contacting the council by visiting www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/parking, calling 08000 514 514 or emailing parking@ gloucestershire.gov.uk.

“I am glad to be sitting down, as it seems from the above that some common sense may be prevailing at long last.

Introducing parking permits and parking restrictions where absolutely essential and unavoidable to ensure that residents have space to park, as long as costs to those residents are kept to a minimum and not increased arbitrarily to make profit, is sensible.

As to removal of superfluous yellow lines - great - and it really is about time that these "build outs" as they are referred to are, for the most part removed. Perhaps they were originally intended to reduce vehicle speeds and to give some physical evidence of one way designated roads, but if that was their intention they don't work in any event - so get rid. Just leave those small sections where trees have been planted (the ones that have survived vandalism by local kids!).”
