A GLOUCESTER man is fuming after a 20-minute trip to Burger King ended in him having to pay £180 when his car was clamped.

Tim Davis, 44, of Quedgeley, parked in the Peel Centre car park on March 2 at 12pm as he was going to the fast food restaurant for lunch.

When he realised he had no money, popped round to the nearest bank, Lloyds, which is just off the site on Bristol Road.

But on his return he discovered that his car had been clamped and he had been landed with a £180 fine.

"I was astonished beyond belief," said Mr Davis, a mobile marine engineer. "The attendant said that he watched me leave the car park, and that as soon as I did, I was committing a violation.

"He claimed that as soon as I left the car park I was no longer entitled to free parking. A customer could spend a lot of money in Toys R Us and then pop over to look in the window of the bathroom showroom to then face a £180 fine, it is gobsmacking.

"I think it is absolutely unbelievable and the amount they charge is unreal, it is so out of kilter with the crime committed. It is just a gross money making scheme.

"I will never visit the Peel Centre again and I have already spoken to and warned several friends who also will not now go there. They should make it more clear on the signs – they are tiny. They are not clear enough and should be a lot more noticeable."

Premier Parking Services Ltd own the car park.

A spokesman said: "All our fees are approved and regulated by The British Parking Association.

"All signage is approved and regulated by The British Parking Association and displayed in accordance to the instruction of Peel Management."

Grenville Bird of, Peel, said:"Tenants and customers alike have seen an improvement in parking facilities since the new system was introduced which was put in place to help genuine shoppers and to prevent the misuse of this facility."

“This business is daylight robbery taylored to fit just within the limits of the law!

What I fail to understand though is why the last poster was 'robbed' for twice as much as the rest of us!?”

“The other saturday, i came to the Peel Centre with my family.
I had four children with me who seemed rather excited. O.K, i left the site but didn't think about the signs as i was more interested about making sure my children were safe as we made our way across the car park. Lack of concentration made me not to think about the signs. We went into town and stayed for quite a while, Went to go into Toys R Us when i glanced over and noticed i had been clamped had a ticket.
I then looked round and saw the signs which are rather high up. The signs could have been on a lower post. When i looked round to see if i could see any security, i could not seen them, only then i realised they were dressed in grey jacket and trousers a grey van with a very small sign on the bonnet about parking wardens. This to me is not very visible.
But what annoyed me the most was the £250 i had to pay, £125 for the clamp and £125 for the deployment of a vehicle coming from Bristol. The vehicle was deployed from Bristol at 15.05, i was still in the car park at 16.55, Remind me again how long does it take to get from Bristol to Gloucester? No longer than at the most one hour. Nearly two hours later no vehicle came to collect my car. Should i have paid the other £125? No i shouldn,t.
This is absolutely ridiculous charging and the car park is confusing as i went one way as directed and realised i was actually going out the wrong way.
The attendants, well there manners were disgusting, they had no smile only grins as to say," That is another bonus."
I have learned my lesson, but i won't be returning again.

I will say this though, they are making enough money so the clamping company won't go bust in this recession will they?”

“As a correction or clarification to my previous post, my original comment was made at about 5.40PM on 11th March. It appeared on the board after I posted it, but is no longer there.

Censorship prevails at every level in this country.

I dared to criticise the City Council for failing to povide adequate free parking for short term visitors to Gloucester. I also pointed out that much cheaper or even free parking is available in both Stroud and Cheltenham.

I raised concerns that Gloucester City Council had no interest in attracting shoppers, business customers or tourists to our mediocre city, as they were more interested in raising revenue from parking charges.

I also cited examples about how our Gallic cousins would not stand for such tactics as wheel clamping in an area that has historically provided free parking.

The best protest would be for individuals who can spare the time to actually fill the Peel Centre car park, and stay in their cars until moved on by an official Warden. If challenged just move to another space. If you see some unfortunate get clamped then apply superglue to the lock on the clamp as soon as the clampers have sneaked off sniggering.

If you recognise a clamper's vehicle and can serrupticiously superglue the locks on their vehicle then do it to them as well.

People power will solve this menace, but unlike the French, I doubt there are enough supporters of direct action in Gloucester to get this idea off the ground.”

“Surprise surprise, I have just read the entire thread and having posted the 29th comment about 10hours ago I see that it has been removed. Thanks Big Brother.

If you go to the Peel centre and park, take some superglue with you to mess up the lock if you get clamped.”

    “Agree with Joe K suggestions!

I think this clamping outfit is creating very bad press for the shops in the peel centre.

They are interested pushing the law to it's extreems in order to maximising profits! Fair play doesn't come into it!”

“That comment about a barrier at Asda really takes me back, Paul Cooke. Late Seventies/early Eighties, wasn't it? Don't know why they ever stopped the practise, unless it became too expensive to operate during a similar downturn. I have an even vaguer recollection that they expanded the car park (buying up nearby land?), so 'pay to park' may not have been as attractive as pulling in more car owners to shop, even if some of them did take liberties.

And I also took that left turn unintentionally, necessitating a U turn. Whoever is signposting the temporary diversions isn't doing a very good job, and not just inside the Peel centre. For about a week, maybe longer, anyone approaching the centre from Trier Way would be directed down Bristol Road by the signed filter, unless they shifted to the right at the very last minute.”

“'What would happen if your wife asked you to bring the car for her as she had a lot of shopping, and as she had a set of keys of her own,she could then load the car and drive away, unfortunately the person who drove the car had to leave the car park and return to work,so his wife would then find the car clamped. You could not tell anyone hat you were doing,as they hide and pounce - N.S.Miles Norman Miles, Chengdu,China

Norman, you must be psychic. That is exactly the scenario I envisaged, except it was a brother bringing in his sister's car (covered by her insurance), before walking to his restaurant job on Southgate St/Bristol Rd. She would have taken the bus to get to her own job in the morning, and rang him to bring the car in as she went to shop at the Peel Centre.

They really have *no* proof that an offence is being committed, but it doesn't stop them.”

“once upon a time, they had an exit barrier on the Asda car prak and you had to pay to get out if you didn't have a valid receipt from Asda for that day. They should bring that in for the Peel Center and back in at ASDA

and what's with the new layout at the Peel Center, I picked my daughter up from the cinema the other evening and found myself going out at a left only exit that was not obviously left only when I started on it... had to take a massive detour to get going the right way again... as Llanthony road was closed. The signage is terrible.”

“RE: Ian Martin, ¿would any of you lot do thye same? I think not!¿

Seems your making a big assumption about all the posters on here!! But to get things in perspective it¿s in his interest (the hero) to help ¿Toys R Us¿. What thanks would we get?¿probably end up getting clamped as we left the peel centre chasing the theif!

Are you sure the theif concerned wasn¿t just grabbing his £125 back from the till? (haha)”
