Hundreds of bargain hunters queued patiently to spend a penny in Gloucestershire.

Shoppers began lining up outside Marks and Spencer stores in Cheltenham and Gloucester before 7am to choose five items on sale for just 1p.

Knickers, jewellery and sweets were some of the 20 products on sale for a penny as part of the M&S Penny Bazaar promotion.

First in the queue in Cheltenham were sisters Frances Pincott, 74, from Prestbury and Georgina Prout, 69, from Leckhampton.

Frances said: "I have been a Marks and Spencer customer for a long time. I wanted to make sure I got my place in the queue."

“Shame on them charging poor pensioners a full penny. I thought they got a 10% discount on just about everything under the sun!!!”

“Anon, fod, we all know that its to get people to shop there. You must have a really sad life, lets ban all promos shall we. Its not like anyone forces you to go there, and M&S have a perfect right to do this if they wish. Its called "competition".”

“Yes, I nipped in relatively early and there was nothing left. Bit of a gimmick to get you in the shop - if you're really serious about this type of promotion you need to back it with a sensible level of stock. But let's be honest - most of the stuff they were saying would be 1p wasn't exactly exciting, top notch or must haves (apart from the knickers, obviously)!”
