Petition calls for bus stop to help 'isolated' elderly
CALLS for a new bus route in Matson to help elderly people make the trip into the city centre and surrounding supermarkets have resulted in a petition.
Pensioners in Matson Lane have been complaining that the lack of a bus route along the lower part of the road has left them isolated and cut off.
The nearest bus stop to them is for the Number 1 service at the end of Caledonian Road, which Barbara Voyce, 81, said many people found too far away to walk to.
She said: "A lot of the people have been here since the houses were built in the 1950s so they are in the same boat.

"I came here in 1973, so a bit later than some, but a lot of people here are of a similar age and we struggle to get about nowadays. We simply can't walk to Caledonian Road.
"We would love to have a bus stop in Matson Lane, it would mean that we could get into the city centre and to supermarkets to do our shopping.
"At the moment we feel really isolated.
"I live on my own and it would be nice to be able to get out and about."
A petition with more than 50 signatures has been handed to Gloucestershire County Council in a bid to get a bus route through Matson Lane.
"I hope it works," added Mrs Voyce.
"I imagine most of us would go into town once or twice a week, and it would help to boost the economy too.
"There is also the doctors' surgery and the church down the road which a lot of people can't get to."
Gloucestershire county councillor Steve McHale (L, Matson and Robinswood) handed the petition in on Wednesday.
He said: "There are a lot of elderly people living in that part of Matson and I think a bus route going through there would mean the world to them.
"The petition has been handed in, we will just see what happens next."
A spokesman for Stagecoach West said: "We value all customer feedback and will monitor this situation with keen interest."
