Plastic volunteers hit the streets
VOLUNTEERS from an environmental charity are hitting the streets to let people in Cheltenham know about the changes to their recycling programme.
The borough council is introducing plastic bottle recycling to every home in the town this summer.
More than 20 per cent of people are already benefiting from the increased coverage, but Vision 21 campaigners are using the change to drive home their green message.
Spokeswoman Rebecca Dobson said: "The champions aim to raise awareness of climate change by engaging with their neighbours.
"They have been involved in many projects over the years and continue to help raise awareness, with enthusiasm."
The new scheme involves kerbside recycling bins placed in streets across the town.
Vision 21's street champions aim to make sure people make the most of the new facilities.
The charity is also holding a meeting on July 5 to advise people how they can play a part in the scheme.
Taking place at the YMCA, in Vittoria Walk, from 7pm to 8.15pm, the evening will include a talk on how to carry out a home energy audit.
Councillor Roger Whyborn, cabinet member for sustainability at the borough, said: "We are grateful to Vision 21 for their support. The roll-out of plastic bottle recycling across the borough is being very well-received.
"I am pleased that soon all of our residents will be able to benefit from it."
A spokesman for Cheltenham Borough Council said: "'We will leaflet a fortnight before to tell residents when the collections will start for their area.
"This will be rolled out over the 2010/11 year. If they haven't received a leaflet then they're not on the scheme yet."
One in five rounds in Cheltenham have been offered the plastic recycling service.
Speaking last year when the scheme was announced, Rob Bell, the council's assistant director for operations, said: "It is essential that ways are found to divert waste from landfill that are cost-effective and benefit the public.
"Extending our kerbside collections to include plastic bottles has been made possible through the use of new technology and will be better for everyone."
