POLICE have been praised for their quick action following a public meeting to campaign against speeding on the A436 from the Air Balloon roundabout.

Action group North Cotswolds Rural area Against Speeding Harm (No Crash) called on police and county highways to help clamp down on motorists flaunting the national limit.

Group chairman Paul Hodgkinson, also Cotswold Liberal Democrat leader, said: "The police carried out a speed check in Andoversford the very next evening and this was noticed by local people.

"It's great to see such quick action.

“It might be to check the road has the right limit. In the past they might have put up 30 signs on what looks like a 40 road. How do you decide? See what speed on the road looks safe to most pedestrians and motorists, and make sure the limit lets them travel legally.
Use the limit to catch those overdoing it.”

“Speed "check"? Does that involve pulling over speeders, or just taking a note of every vehicle's speed, and working out an average?”

“They did speed checks on the B4077 - what we need is empowerment of the speed limits. All the speed checks showed was that the "mean speed" was just under 50. So what so if you take the 80 year old from Alderton pottering up to the Doctors surgery in Winchcombe doing 30 or 40 another car is doing 70 or 80. Residents clocked one motorbike doing three figures. It will continue as long as there is no deterrent.”
