POLICE have criticised residents for not doing enough to prevent crime.

Officers from the Hester's Way Safer Community Team say people are failing to follow simple advice after spending a week testing doors to see if they were locked.

Inspector Erik Sherwood said: "Just a few simple crime prevention methods such as not leaving items on display in your car and keeping your front door locked can significantly reduce the opportunities for thieves to steal from homes in the area.

"We have been delivery leaflets to addresses in the area advising people about the quick and easy steps they can take to help avoid becoming a victim.

"Whilst we've been delivering them in the early evening we have also been trying the doors of addresses and have been shocked to discover how many people had left their houses insecure."

Thirty homes and five vehicles in the Persimmon Gardens and Arle Farm area were found unlocked in one evening.

Mr Sherwood said: "Simply turning a door handle to see if it's open is exactly what a potential burglar will do so don't let them by 'lucky' at your house.

"Our policing team run regular operations and carry out patrols to both prevent burglaries and catch offenders by residents also need to help stop these crimes by taking responsibility for their home security.

"We would also like to encourage people to talk to our crime reduction officers who can offer you a variety of tips and advice on how you can keep your home and property safe."

“Get a life Ann! You think you should leave your windows and doors open and when you get burgled cost the Country thousands of pounds in resources and investigation? Thats exactly WHY the Police have so much paperwork. Taking statements from victims of Burglary that left their front door open. Perhaps if this was not the case they would have time to walk the beat. Crime Prevention is everybodys responsability. Would you like the Police to tuck you in at night as well?”

“Wrong. If we could have our homes windows open and doors unlocked at night 30 years ago, why not now? Because our police officers who used to walk the beat are in offices completing paperwork! and being let down by the courts. We have a right to sleep safe in our homes and our police to walk around safely too. The sooner the courts do their job the better.”
