Michael Pook has agreed a one-year deal with Cheltenham Town and will put pen to paper at the start of August.

The former Swindon Town midfielder has been on trial with the Robins since the second week of pre-season training and has appeared in the last four warm-up games.

Pook, 23, becomes boss Martin Allen's eighth new signing of the summer.

"We have reached an agreement with Michael and we now have cover in positions all over the field," Allen said.

"He is a good player and he has trained hard to catch up. He is solid and reliable and we need players who are going to stay fit.

"He is only 23 and he has good legs, energy and he has a lot of experience for his age.

"There are a lot of good players about without clubs and it's a worrying time so he should thank his lucky stars we have taken him and it fits into our wage budget, which is important.

"He hasn't won the lottery signing for us, but he needs to use this season as a springboard to play higher and then he can earn good money."

Cheltenham came back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Bristol Rovers and maintain their unbeaten pre-season run at the Abbey Business Stadium last night.

New boys Justin Richards and Tom Denton were both on target to register their first goals for the Robins.

"The first half was lacklustre and poor, but we stepped it up all over the field in the second half," Allen said.

"We showed good character to come back and we could have won it. When Justin Richards came in after the summer, he was a little bit behind, but he has picked up now.

"He has grown in stature, confidence and he has been very positive so I was chuffed for him to get the goal. In the dressing room now there is a feeling that if players don't do it, they are not going to play, so there is an edge between them all to fight for their places."

Cheltenham head off for a five-day stay at Blandford Army Camp today and they will play a friendly against an Army Select XI tomorrow evening.

"It's about team building, getting to know each other and spending a lot of time with the PTIs which will be fun," Allen said. "We will be doing some army exercises, mental and physical, and we will still be doing football work in the mornings."

“Vincent - Kenny Lunt eh? Wow, what a superstar you've signed there! Bet you'll have the cream of Europe's scouts in Wales to watch Kenny bamboozle Sven's County revolution! Hold out for the biggest sum you can get!”

“Yea little vinny, that means a great deal when you've been beaten by the Harriers.

Ha, ha, ho, ho, Yatesie, one of our old boys, even better.

John Trewick wasn't very happy with them after the(quote)"disappointing result". Never mind vin, it's only a friendly.”

“Apparently we were considering a move for him but decided that there were better options available e.g. Kenny Lunt.

He's probably found his level with a lower level League 2 club.

    Good luck to him.”

“Pooky is a hard working player who has improved steadily after making the 1st team at a fairly young age. Never really given the credit he deserved by STFC fans, but it was the right decision by Danny Wilson to let him go to bring in more quality. I feel he'll do a good job for you in League 2, but I will be surprised if he makes it at a higher level as Allen has quoted in the article. I'll certainly be wishing him well this season.”

“Good luck Pooky - he'll do a good job at CTFC and has plenty of experience despite still being only 23.... One thing which lets him down is a reluctance to shoot when in front of goal - often preferring to pass sideways or back instead of blasting at goal... Hopefully he'll improve for you!”

“OC - You DID miss 1 player - Tabor from Chelsea has also joined, so that makes 8 - that's about 5 more than I thought we'd sign!”

“Hayles, Hutton, Richards, Pook, Boz, Denton, Alsop. Even if you include the loaness and non-ncontract players I only make that 6. Can't the Echo even get basic facts right? Unless January is now in the summer and yiou include Drissa and Elvis!”
