He decided to set up the Stroud Off-road Squad, known more simply by the initials SOS and which attracts cyclists of all abilities from across the region, to put some structure to their outings.
He even continued organising trips despite an injury which stopped him going out himself for a while.
Following a chance comment on one of his many visits to Noahs Ark he has left his motor spares delivery van behind and now cycles to his new place of work.
He said: "There can't be many people who can say that they are being paid to follow their hobby.
"This is a dream come true for me and it couldn't have come at a better time what with the increase in the number of people taking up cycling following our British sporting successes this year, increases in the price of fuel and the desire to get fit".
Chris Hart who runs and owns Noahs Ark said: "The sort of enthusiasm and experience that Steve brings us can't be learnt from a book.
"He will be a valuable asset to the business".
