Postal workers are to stage two nationwide strikes next week in a bitter row over pay, jobs and working conditions, it was announced today.

About 42,000 mail centre staff and drivers will walk out next Thursday (October 22) for 24 hours.

It will be followed by another 24-hour stoppage on Friday (23) by 78,000 delivery and collection staff.

The Communication Workers Union said it had made a "genuine offer" to avert a national strike and accused the Royal Mail of rejecting it without proper consideration.

“I'm sorry anon, but when half of the postmen roll into work late and still drunk from the night before and they can't even be bothered to actually do there work because they are so consumed in drink most of the time. they deserve to lose there jobs! give the jobs to people who really need them!”

“Amy, your husband is despicable for calling 99% of postman lazy if he is one himself, he should know how bad things are at RM at present, and be supporting his colleuges, not slagging them off...”

“The only problem with this strike is that its only the postal workers. Since the bankers messed up everything for everyone it has been US that are paying for it through jobs and taxes. The only way it will be effective is if all the unions join in and tell the people in charge that we have had enough. This was also the same reason why the minors strike was unsuccessful.”

“You employ people without an i.q. and you'll get strikes at a time that any sensible person can see will cripple the company......well done royal mail staff, you're signing your own p45 and hopefully bringing change to a poor postal service......Good riddance.”
