Posties in Gloucestershire will have the arm of the law behind them next time they are bitten by a dog.

Extra legal protection for postal workers, health visitors and utility engineers is being proposed under new Government plans.

In less than a year, some 3,000 posties were bitten by family pets across the UK.

In 2009, there were 30 injuries from dog bites reported to Gloucestershire's hospitals alone.

But the plans will also protect householders from prosecution if their dog attacks a burglar or trespasser on their land.

It will also become compulsory for all dogs to be microchipped.

“Also, do not forget the other service providers that people have delivered at their doors.

My father has worked as a milkman for over 30 years and has been attacked and bitten several times during this time, whilst either delivering goods or when he has gone to collect payments etc, of which, has been unable to claim for this!

Does this mean that they are now protected under the new law???

All dogs to be microchip.... I take it that the owner would have to pay for this!

I'm not an anti-dog person, as I really love them, but it is the owner's responsibility for its actions, either due to poor training, letting them on their own in the front garden not supervised, or letting them at the door before you open it etc.”
