TRANSPORT bosses have agreed to resurface a pothole-ridden road in Matson following calls from residents.

Gloucestershire County councillor Steve McHale (Lab Matson and Robinswood) has secured an agreement for Cotteswold Road to be resurfaced in the next few weeks.

He said potholes were a big problem in Matson and vowed to continue fighting to improve the roads in the area.

"The roads are a disgrace in Matson," said Coun McHale.

"We have had some success with Pine Way already being resurfaced, Cotteswold Road being done soon and Matson Avenue will hopefully be done next year some time. "I'm really delighted that this agreement has been made, but I now want to see the other roads in Matson resurfaced and I will continue the battle."

Coun McHale said he would now be lobbying the council to get the rest of the roads in Matson resurfaced.

He said: "It is great that we have finally got the commitment for this work to be done, but now comes the fight for the other roads."

Andrea Brewster, 34, from Matson Avenue, said that the road surface had been a problem throughout the three years she had lived in the area.

"Potholes have always been a problem here," she said.

"In some areas it is extremely bad.

"It is great news that the work is being done, particularly in Matson Avenue as it is the main route through the area and badly needs work."

Andrea often uses the buses in Matson and said the service would vastly improve after the resurfacing.

"It is a problem for them and the drivers in Matson," she said.

"I'm glad the work is being done, it will make it better for everyone.

"I'm glad the council has finally realised Matson Avenue in particular is a busy route used by a lot of drivers."

Gloucester City councillor Janet Lugg (Lab Matson and Robinswood) said the resurfacing work was good news for cars and buses.

"It is badly needed, especially in Matson Avenue," she said.

"The condition of the road there is absolutely dreadful.

"I don't think people realise that it is the main route through Matson and that a huge volume of traffic uses it every single day.

"We have had the problems for around five years and it is good news for everyone."

“I'm sure that as good as Mr McHale's intentions are I'm sure that they don't concider the disabled who have to use the very very bumpy, potholed and badly maintained pavements that are so uncomfortable for those of us that have to use a buggy to get around on. So please Mr McHale think of the disabled when concidering repaires to the highways as they do include pavement repair.”
