YOUNG witches and wizards took to the corridors of Hogwarts for a rather spooky showing of the latest Harry Potter film.

Kitted out from head to foot in fancy dress, 460 Potter enthusiasts crowded into Gloucester Cathedral for a showing of The Half Blood Prince.

Flaming torches supplied by Marketing Gloucester set the scene for the film shown on Thursday which features the building's ancient cloisters in the film's corridor scenes.

Since the release of the first film in 2001, the cloisters have become famous across the world for their connection with Harry, Ron and Hermione and the wizarding school they call home.

Operations and marketing Manager Bairbre Lloyd said the special showing of the film had been very successful.

She said: "It was quite an occasion really.

"It was quite a thrill when you saw bits of the Cathedral in the film while you were sat inside it.

"It was also very atmospheric. Marketing Gloucester brought in some flaming torches. The whole thing went very well."

“Sally, if you have ever been to a "Maximum Reality" production of a Harry Potter movie, the atmosphere is tonnes better, and this years production was dropped in favour of the cathedral showing. I, for one, hope there is NEVER showing like this - what a waste of money. GCC: Please, please, please bring back Max. Reality next year!”

“I think the people who commented on the height of the screen and the sound are missing the point. Of course it would be very different to the cineplex, it's a Cathedral. It was all about the atmosphere - and that was brilliant. I know it echoed a bit but I'm guessing that the people who organised the sound were professionals who did it as well as possible in such a big building. I could hear every word, and I wasn't right at the front or anything like that. More special film performances like this, please.”

“We also left the screening early due to the very poor sound quality - you literally could not tell what was being said throughout the film and I only waited until nearly an hour in as I wanted to give it a chance. It did seem at one stage that they had tried to clear up the quality, however it didn't last so maybe that was just me being hopeful!!

There were also issues with the projector bouncing / moving and on a couple of occasions the film did not display correctly on the screen - this issue was rectified but surely should not have happened in the first place.

When I spoke to someone at the back of the cathedral who asked if we were leaving, she blamed the acoustics - of course these are going to have an impact however I would have expected there to have been some form of trial run which could have helped iron this out and provide clearer sound. It may have made them realise it couldn't be done however at least this would have been before they marketed it.

A real shame as the idea of screening the film at the Cathedral, along with the pre-screening tours of the Cloisters, was excellent, however some better planning may have helped the execution and prevented us and others having to leave early.”

“The acoustics were so bad it was impossible to understand any of the spoken words.
I was one of those who had to leave early as it was so painfull to endure.”

“All I can say is "bring back Maximum Reality", the Guildhall event was so much better. The screen in the cathedral was too low and the seating should have been staggered to avoid people straining to see through the gaps between people's heads. Half-an-hour into the film, I just wanted to go home - indeed, some people did actually leave early!”

“I think that Marketing Gloucester were actually the organisers along with the cathedral. They did more than just supply the flaming torches! Credit where credit is due!”
