CAROLS on the hour at Gloucester Cathedral held extra significance this year as tributes were paid to the children lost in an American school shooting.

Traditional Christmas hymns rang out on each and every hour from 11am until 4pm on Saturday in bitesize chunks.

"You run out of words when things like this happen in the news," he said. "They seem far away but we can translate this to any school in our local community. Words are not enough, but words of singing when we can all join in together are powerful."

The Cathedral Youth Choir led the singing from 11am until 1pm, followed by the Junior Choir until 3pm and finished off by a performance from the Cathedral Choir.

Carols at the event, which was backed by The Citizen, included In the Bleak Midwinter and Away in a Manger and readings were also heard.
