"Staff at the supermarket witnessed the assault and called police, who arrived quickly and arrested the male suspect."

However, the woman left the scene before police arrived.

"She told a member of the public who went to help her that she was three months pregnant," said Inspector Tierney.

Police are now anxious to speak to the woman.

She is described as a white female, around 28 years of age, 5ft 1in tall, of slim build with long, very dark hair.

At the time of the assault she was wearing a denim jacket, three quarter length jeans and high-heeled shoes.

The woman, or anyone who knows who she may be, is urged to contact Gloucester police on 101, quoting incident 23 of September 15.

People can also contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or via www.crimestoppers-uk.org

A spokesman for Asda said it had carried out an internal investigation of the incident but he could not comment further at this time.
