Prestbury parking spaces ‘will be here by Christmas’
SHOPKEEPERS in Prestbury have been assured that money set aside to introduce new customer parking bays will be spent in time for Christmas.
Concerns were raised by a store owner that promises to help lure shoppers to the village during the festive period could dissipate.
But councillors who backed proposals to spend somewhere in the region of £5,000 for new parking spots along Prestbury High Street have said there are no plans to back down.
A petition set up by independent traders circulated in June was presented to the parish councillors.

It was agreed that unused cash in the council’s annual pot would be put to good use.
But, as Christmas draws closer, Steve Hammond, the owner of Prestbury Village Stores, is worried that time could pass by without any change.
He said: “I have been chasing parish councillors about the issue.
“There are supposed to be several parking spaces being introduced to the High Street but I am struggling to find out when that is going to happen.
“We were promised it would happen before Christmas which would be good because it would provide people more with the opportunity to pop into our store.
“Conversations were held earlier in the year when it was confirmed the parking bays would be installed before the holidays.
“If it happens, it would be a huge benefit to shops in the village because it will encourage more people who already drive to the supermarkets to come to us instead.
“My main concern is, however, that if we don’t get it done this year and it therefore gets pushed back, that money could then disappear next year.”
But that won’t happen, according to Jenneth Slater, the chairman of Presbury Parish Council.
He said: “As far as I am aware, it is still the plan [to install parking bays by Christmas].
“It has been arranged between the county council highways team and local councillors.
“The funding is available... and it is absolutely essential for traders in the High Street that it goes ahead.
“I think it is unfair that they are losing out on trade because there is nowhere free for customers to park.”
