An auction of promises has raised more than £2,000 for Cheltenham Connect's Local Trading History Project.

The project aims to raise the profile of south Cheltenham as an area of interest and all proceeds from the night went towards the campaign.

Organisers hope to create a historical map of Bath Road, the Suffolks and Tivoli to help promote the area.

The auction at St James CofE Primary School raised £2,269 with prizes including a tour of the House of Commons, two club tickets and car parking for Cheltenham Races. Also up for grabs were lunch for two with a glass of champagne at Le Champignon Sauvage, two weekend adult tickets for Wychwood Music Festival and four tickets to a Cheltenham Town match.

Belinda Wilson, of Cheltenham Connect, said: "It went really well with nearly 70 people turning up on the night and all the auction prizes proving popular. The trip in a Bugatti was keenly fought for. It finally went for £90, having been donated by owner Mike Preston from Independent Eye Care in Bath Road."

Cheltenham Connect is a new community initiative running in south Cheltenham that aims to promote produce and trade.

The group would like to hear from anyone with historical tales to tell. Anyone who would like to get involved can email wendy@cheltenhamconnect.co.uk

“How bizarre! In the middle of an article about raising the profile for part of Cheltenham, an area where there are many pubs and restaurants, there is an advert for a pub in Alderton. near Tewkesbury!!”
