KAREN Davies spent more than three weeks travelling across Europe braving life-threatening storms – all to rescue four puppies.

The 37-year-old, from Churchdown, found a litter of puppies in the wall of her hotel when holidaying in Crete last year.

This was the beginning of an emotional journey for Karen, a hairdresser, who made a vow to herself to help dogs in the country, which are often neglected and discarded by their owners.

During the course of last summer she made several journeys back and forth between Gloucester and Crete, before embarking on an epic journey on December 23 to rescue five dogs.

She said: "I decided to get them back over here, but I had so many problems with trying to arrange flights, so Volkswagen Commercial in Cheltenham lent me a transporter.

"I set off just before Christmas, spent Christmas day on a boat en route to Crete, and finally arrived there five days later."

Karen's route took her from England into France, Switzerland, Italy and Greece before arriving in Crete.

"When I got there I gave the dogs a couple of days to get used to the van as they'd never been anywhere before," added Karen.

"Then the journey back was absolutely horrendous.

"During one of the boat rides there was a seven-hour delay due to a storm and they were readying the lifeboats.

"But luckily we all got back safe and sound, arriving on January 9."

Karen, who funded the entire operation herself, was hoping to keep all the dogs but due to a change in her circumstances she is now in the process of finding new homes for them.

She added: "They are really lovely dogs, and in an ideal world I would have loved to have kept them all. Unfortunately that can't happen so the best thing I can do is offer them to a loving home."

■ If anyone would like to home one of the dogs (Cretan hounds) they can contact Karen on 07766 291 507.

    “sunshineydays,
What on earth are you on about? No-one mentioed a £1 puppy appeal, did they? People have alleged that they donated money and time to raise funds to repair a church roof, and that the funds were then used to rescue the dogs from Crete.”

“There seems to be a lot of controversy as to where and how funding was achieved for this trip. This is up to the respective aggrieved people to sort out themselves legally.

Whether you agree with what she has done or not, at the end of the day this lady actually did something about a cause she felt strongly about, not just talked about it.

My original comment has received quite a high rating. I wish there were more kind hearted people in this world 'doing' not just thinking, moaning or criticising.”

“...and no she didn't fund the trip herself, in her own words she was lent a VW by a company in Cheltenham, I suspect that these are not the only people to have donated to this trip.”

“Strange how people close to her, and donated money, feel cheated, some involving litigation.
Surely before any of this, Karen could have demonstrated with copies of bank statements, receipts for ferries etc, that the two are separate. People only get peed off, or contemplate litigation, after getting dubious info.”

“So why are people complaining that monies donated were meant to go to a Church Charity?

Just telling us that she is a kind person who has made contacts with other people with similar interests, does not make this right.

As you seem to know her well, maybe you could answer SoapBoxes charges.

Wether or not the dogs are "beautiful creatures" does not make this hairbrained charity "quest" right. Maybe donating and spending time with animal charities IN CRETE would be FAR FAR more beneficial to all involved than bringing over 5 dogs, to now be an English rehoming issue.
Whilst these dogs will go (hopefully) to loving home, rest assured that thousands of other strays in Crete could have been neutered for a fraction this whole fiasco cost.”

“No no no!!! There is a big confusion going on here! Firstly, make NO mistake. The rescue of the dogs from Crete was funded entirely by Karen herself and had NO connection financially with The Puppy Appeal.

The "£1 Puppy Appeal" is an appeal that Karen was inspired to set up when she experienced the state of the homeless and mistreated dogs and puppies out in Crete. It is an ongoing project which she will continue to persue in order to help neuter and find homes for dogs in Crete. She also intends to help dogs in this country. The monies donated to the "Puppy Appeal" will be used for this purpose and at present are safely saved in a legitimate "Puppy Appeal" registered bank account. Karen is a very honest person and has set up everything legally.

Through her quest to save these dogs, Karen has made a number of contacts with other dog lovers and organisations with the same focus on dog welfare, whom have contacted her when they heard of her passion and relentless mission to rescue the puppies. They have seen that she is the kind of person that can truly make a big difference to the lives of dogs.

With respect to the forementioned fundraising event in Summer 2011, by being part of this Karen was merely trying to raise awareness of "The Puppy Appeal". (I repeat NONE of the monies raised from this event went towards her own personal rescue of her 5 puppies). There were no false pretences. Never were and never will be.

The dogs that Karen has rescued from Crete are absolutely beautiful creatures. Fellow animal lovers would most certainly understand why Karen simply could not walk away from these puppies and leave them to die or be put down or mistreated. Since finding them in July 2011, she has had them trained by a professional and they have been treated with deep kindness ever since Karen came into their live. They truly are a joy to be around.

So to invest so much time and money into bringing these pups back safely to the UK some may say is 'crazy'... but in the words of Robin Williams "You're only given a spark of madness. You mustn't lose it." 'Barking mad' in Karen's case LOL (she would find that funny as she has a super sense of humour) but through all of this, Karen has achieved what she set out to do, she didn't give up on her intention.... those gorgeous dogs are now safe and sound with great lives ahead of them. They will be given loving forever homes and there is no doubt they WILL live happily ever after.”

“anonathome, yes some of the comments are hurtfull on here, there are a lot of trolls on this website! Some of which are written just to provoke or upset, mine ISNT.
However to say "but until you people start doing something like this yourselves to see how much time and effort it takes, then I dont think you should be so quick to judge."

errr...did you misread my post - "even a concert was organised with many "blagged" things provided free of charge, Which was hard work for the many people who helped with very little or no thanks! "
In response to your other comments i feel i must add that the woman is rude, and extreamly difficult to deal with, and has alienated many many people with this fiasco! I offered help, money and support to a cause i was told was a church roof!
so I AM GOING TO JUDGE! END OF STORY!
Im not one to cause waves, or post on websites like this, but the line that read she done it all on her own prompted me to!
As for legal action for the "misunderstanding" or what you call "communication issues" i think thats rather pathetic for the sum of £200, (which id like to think didnt end up in someones pocket!) however i believe someone else, possibly a larger donator, was less happy than me and is pursuing something legally.
My final thoughts...midlife crisis?...need to leave your mark?...who knows, but my church roof is still leaking!”

“anonathome - misguided sympathy - wecan not sweep all the world's puppies and babies - the kindest thing for these puppies may have been to be put down where they were - as suggested by Stuart 2010. If she is that caring why not take a few from those abandoned closer to home?”
